Parallel of Joshua &
Joshua & Ephesians
Parallel Between Joshua & Ephesians
Dr. Steven G. Cook
A. The Major Theme of Joshua is "The Victory of Faith"
B. In Ch. 1 we found the "Warrant of Faith" - Joshua was charged by God to
succeed Moses into the Promised Land.
C. In Ch. 1 God spoke to Joshua and encouraged him in three ways:
1. Promise of Possession (vss. 2-4)
2. Promise of His Presence (vs. 5)
3. Promise of His Promises (vss. 6-9)
D. We also found the word "SUCCESS" mentioned the only time in the Word of
God (Josh. 1:8)
E. The Conditions for Success are 7-Fold:
1. Understand the Purpose of God (vss. 1-2)
2. Have Faith in the Promises of God (vs. 3)
3. Have Assurance of the Presence of God (vs. 5)
4. Be Courageous in the Name of God (vss. 6-7a)
5. Be Faithful to the Leadings of God (vs. 7b)
6. Delight in the WORD of God (vs. 8a)
7. Be OBEDIENT to the Will of God (vs. 8b; 16)
F. Today, I want to digress just a little and show how that the Book of Joshua (O.T.)
and the Book of Ephesians (N.T.) Parallel one another.
II. Parallel of the Books of Joshua & Ephesians
A. Just as the Book of Deuteronomy & the Book of Acts parallel, and the Book of
Leviticus & the Book of Hebrews parallel, so do Joshua and Ephesians.
B. The Book of Ephesians is the "Book of the Heavenly Places in Christ" (Eph. 1:3)
C. The Book of Joshua is NOT a picture of Heaven, but rather a picture of "Spiritual
Victory" - "Possessing Our Possessions"
D. There can never be "Peace, Joy, REST" so long as Christians are wandering in
the "wilderness" as Israel did.
E. In Eph. 1:3, the phrase, "Heavenly Places" is more literally translated "the
heavenlies" meaning "a sphere of higher and fuller life."
F. Rarely do Believers enter into this "fullness of spiritual living"; Some never
enter into it at all!
G. However, we will see in this parallel between Joshua & Ephesians that there can
be a "REST" that believers can enter into RIGHT NOW - THE VICTORY OF
H. In Joshua we see Israel entering and possessing the "earthly inheritance" given
I. In Ephesians we see the Church entering and possessing the "heavenly
inheritance" given IN CHRIST.
J. There are 5 Occurrences of the expression - "The Heavenlies" in the Book of
Ephesians (Eph. 1:3; 1:20; 2:6; 3:10; 6:12)
K. The "Land of Canaan (Joshua)" and "The Heavenlies (Ephesians)" parallel one
another as we shall see.
III. Each Was Predestined Inheritance of a Chosen People (Eph. 1:3)
A. 500 years before Joshua led Israel over Jordan River God had told Abraham -
"Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art, northward and
southward and eastward and westward, for all the land which thou seest, to thee
will I give it, and thy seed for ever." (Gen. 13:14-15)
B. Later, when Moses led the nation out of Egypt God said, "The Lord shall bring
thee into the land……which He sware unto they fathers to give thee." (Exod. 13:
5) READ - Ephesians 1:3
C. Just as God predestined Israel’s inheritance, so God has predestined the
inheritance of the Church - In Christ.
D. Just as Israel was blessed with all material blessing in earthly places in
Abraham, so the Church is blessed with all spiritual blessing in Christ.
E. Just as Israel had to be IN the LAND in order to enjoy these blessings - so too
must the Church be IN the HEAVENLIES to enjoy spiritual blessings.
F. The reason why so many Christians do not ENJOY their salvation is because
they are not in the place where God bestows them.
IV. Each Was Opened Up by Divinely Ordained Leader (Eph. 1:18-22)
A. In the case of Israel - All was put into the hands of Joshua.
B. Josh. 1:6 - "Unto this people shalt THOU divide for an inheritance the land which
I sware unto their fathers to give them."
C. Deut. 31:7 - "THOU shalt cause them to inherit it."
D. Josh. 11:23 - "Joshua took the whole land….and gave it for an inheritance unto
Israel according their divisions by their tribes."
E. Even so, turning to the Ephesians - "The heavenlies" is opened up by a Divinely
Ordained Leader - The Lord Jesus Christ!
F. Read - Ephesians 1:18-22
G. Joshua is a beautiful type of Christ - It is the Ascended Savior Who divides the
goodly inheritance and allots it to His believing people as by FAITH they plant
their feet upon His Promises!
V. Each Was a Gift of Grace Received by FAITH (Eph. 2:5-8)
A. Canaan was given to Abraham - NOT Moses!
B. By the LAW Israel could never enter Canaan - Moses himself was not privileged
to enter with them.
C. Neither can the LAW ever lead US into God’s Promised Rest.
D. The LAW MUST DIE - Joshua MUST take his place!
E. Read - Joshua 1:1-2 - "…Moses my servant IS DEAD; NOW THEREFORE arise,
and go over this Jordan, thou and all this people, unto the land which I do give
them, even to the children of Israel."
F. So it is with "Spiritual Canaan" which is ours IN CHRIST!
G. Read - Ephesians 2:5-8
H. F.B. Meyer - "The Law of God can never bring the soul of man into the land of
Promise, not because there is any defect in it, but because of human infirmity
I. Eph. 2:8 - "By GRACE Through FAITH".
J. The Old Covenant rest-day was the 7th; The New Covenant rest-day is the 1st.
K. Under the Old we must work the 6 days up to the rest; Under the New we work
down from it - the Rest already possessed in Christ.
VI. Each Is the Sphere of a Striking Divine Revelation (Eph. 3:8-10)
A. Israel’s entering and possessing the land was intended to be a revelation of the
True God to the nations of that day.
B. Read - Joshua 1:24
C. Read - Deut. 28:10
D. Israel’s future "Regathering" to Canaan will consummate this revelation (Isa.
11:11-12; Jer. 23:5-8)
E. The same is true of the Church today - Read - Eph. 3:8-10
F. The consummation of this revelation will one day be fulfilled in the Second
Coming of Christ when the Church will be manifested with Christ in His glory.
VII. Each Is Described as a Scene of Conflict (Eph. 6:12)
A. In earthly Canaan there were giants, the sons of Anak, and walled cities,
fortified against attacks.
B. There were 7 Nations which held the land with strongholds - Hittites;
Girgashites; Amorites; Canaanites; Perizzites; Hivites; and the Jebusites.
C. All were greater and mightier than Israel! There was NO WAY Israel could
defeat these evil nations by themselves!
D. So it is with "Spiritual Canaan" today!
E. Read - Ephesians 6:12
F. Thank God that NO POWER could withstand Joshua and Israel when they
exercised FAITH - AND - NO POWER can withstand believers when we are
empowered by the Lord - Phil. 4:13
